Site Analysis
Based on the research and the site analysis that i did on site 3 (300 Coffey street. Brooklyn, NY 11231). I found out that Red Hook in Brooklyn is more than your typical Brooklyn neighborhood. It's a work in progress, defined by a mixture of light industry, open space, residential enclaves and a still palpable sense of urban pioneering. The population density here is lower than in most of Manhattan, so it can seem, by comparison, very quiet. The site is located just off the bank of the water edge and its offers greats views of the Statue of Liberty and Governors island in the Hudson River. I also noticed that the building located on site 3 have the same building technology and finishes of the other buildings around the Red hook area.

My Building Typology

1)      Which building typology are you researching?

The building typology i will be researching is a Boat museum & Community center.

2)      Why are you researching this building typology?

Based on my research i found that the  community of Red Hook lacks area of catchment and youth development. Introducing a boat museum and community center will attract people to that specific area and will also enhance the living environment of Red hook.

3)      What is the specialty of this building type you would like to research? i.e. museum for dance, school for digital media…

The museum will be one that conserves a collection of the different Red hook artifacts and other objects that are of scientific, artistic and historical importance around the area. The community center will provide educational conferences, community activities and information on health and development of Red hook.

4)   What are the examples that you will be researching....list the examples, location and architect

5)      What are your goals for working with this building type

My goal for working with this building type is to basically attract more people to the Red hook community. I'm introducing a building that would benefit the youths and develop the Red hook community.

6)      What are the program elements that you see included at this point in your building?

  1. A community center would be a great asset to Red Hook. There is a growing trend in population increase as the area shifts from industrial to residential.

However, you will have to address transportation as a potential issue. Community centers need ease of access to be successful, you can look at Ikea and how they solved that problem.

Moreover, you can look into the New York Harbor school in Governor's island. It is a maritime studies high school and you may be able to relate it to your building.

    Where is their website:
    http://www.newyorkharborschool.org/

You can also look into BIG's Mairtime Youth House in Denmark as a good precedent:

Also there seems to be an issue with your blog, your posts are separated under two different pages. That's why we are not able to see your previous site analysis. Check if you can fix this and let me know if you have any issues.

  3. Hello Eldon,

I prepared for you a KMZ and JPG files from Google Earth. I am wondering how to send you them. Or upload somehow here? May be it would be useful for you to look at the Yokohama Maritime Museum in Minato Mirai area.

    Nadya from Varna, Bulgaria

P.S. We have too in our city a maritime museum. We expect an architectural competition for its new building.

  4. Hello Eldon,
You have a fine, but rather large, selection of building typologies. Try keeping it simpler understanding that sometimes "fewer is better" to get an idea across and avoid the massive visual data temptation.
For building hierarchy use darker lines over light ones, it works just fine.
